UC San Diego Named Most Vegan-Friendly School By PETA

An animal rights group named UC San Diego the most vegan-friendly large school in the country, members of the group announced today.

According to Peta2, PETA's youth division, UCSD's Roots Eatery helped it top 31 other large colleges, including Cornell University, UC Berkeley and UCLA in the annual competition in which thousands voted. Wesleyan University took first place the small school division.

The UCSD eatery features vegan dishes like the Spicy Sierra, meatless chicken in barbecue sauce with chipotle soy cream and caramelized onions, and a vegan sausage, non-dairy cheese and peppers creation called El Capitan.

"With creative, delicious dishes such as the Spicy Sierra and El Capitan, UCSD's vegan-friendly dining hall puts the university at the top of its class," said Marta Holmberg, peta2's associate director. "Every year, peta2 meets more and more students from across the country who are protecting animals, the planet, and their own health by joining the vegan revolution.''

The university's market also offers vegan sandwiches, according to peta2.

Peta2 will issue UCSD certificates from the group that recognize it as the nation's most vegan-friendly college, according to the group.
