The Marine Corps will soon require female Marines to perform pull-ups as part of the Corps' physical fitness requirements.

According to a message sent out to all Marines, the USMC will implement the change in two phases, with Phase One beginning January 1, 2013:

PHASE ONE WILL SERVE AS A TRANSITION PERIOD AND IS INTENDED TO ALLOW COMMANDERS AND INDIVIDUAL FEMALE MARINES TO ADJUST INDIVIDUAL AND UNIT TRAINING ROUTINES TO PREPARE FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NEW REQUIREMENTS.

During Phase One, women will still have the option of doing a flexed-arm hang for the physical fitness requirement.

Phase Two starts on January 1, 2014, when pull-ups will replace the flexed-arm hang for female recruits performing the physical fitness test.
