Smoke From Controlled Burn Visible In San Diego's East County

Smoke may be visible over areas in Cuyamaca and Julian today as firefighters and state parks personnel carry out a brush-clearing operation in the Cuyamaca Rancho State Park.

A prescribed burn is scheduled for 60 acres in the park's Fern Flat area off state Route 79 between Lookout and Pipeline roads from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to Capt. Mike Mohler of Cal Fire.

Mohler said smoke would be visible in the nearby communities of Julian and Cuyamaca throughout the day.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
