The Commander of Naval Forces Japan, Rear Adm. Dan Cloyd, apologized to the people of Okinawa for the alleged rape of a Japanese woman by two Navy sailors on October 16.

The Stars and Stripes was present for the apology, in which Cloyd said to Okinawa Vice Gov. Kanetoshi Yoseda:

“On behalf of the United States Navy and all forces in Japan, please accept my deepest, most sincere and most heartfelt apologies."

In response to the alleged attack, last Friday the commander of all U.S. forces in Japan imposed an off-base curfew for all U.S. military personnel in that country. The curfew lasts from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., according to a DoD news release.

As Home Post reported last week, Seaman Christopher Browning and Petty Officer 3rd Class Skyler Dozierwalker, both 23, are accused of following a Japanese woman home from work in the early morning hours of October 16. Browning and Dozierwalker then allegedly raped and beat the woman in the parking lot of her apartment building.

Both men remain in Japanese custody.
