One Woman Dead From Border Patrol-Involved Shooting In Chula Vista

A U.S. Border Patrol agent fatally shot a woman in a South Bay neighborhood this afternoon.

The gunfire in the 600 block of Moss Street in Chula Vista was reported about 1 p.m., according to police and federal officials. The woman died at the scene.

It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting, said Ralph Desio, a spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The woman apparently was in a green Honda Accord near Woodlawn Avenue when she was shot, NBC 7 San Diego reported.

Area resident Hector Salazar told the news station he was reading his mail in his home when the deadly shooting occurred a short distance away.

"I just saw an agent with a gun walking toward the car and yelling,'' he said. "But the person inside didn't respond.''

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
