UC San Diego Celebrates Chavez Through April, May

The University of California, San Diego will celebrate the life of Chicano civil rights leader Cesar Chavez with a slate of activities set for the months of April and May.

The series of events kicks off April 3 and includes a lecture from former Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis, who was the first Latina to fill that role. Film screenings and a celebration of Chicano Park are also on the list of activities.

Festivities will start at 11:30 a.m. April 3 with a lunch and awards ceremony meant to honor individuals who have adopted Chavez's ideals and used them to contribute to their communities. Tickets for this event can be purchased via email or phone at chicano-latinostaff@ucsd.edu or (858) 534-6862.

7 p.m., April 3: Hilda Solis, former Secretary of the Department of Labor, will share her thoughts on higher education and how it contributes to a diverse and skilled workforce. For more information, contact jlahaye@ucsd.edu.

10 a.m., April 6: The 35th Annual Thurgood Marshall College Cultural Celebration will include music, dancing, games and a henna workshop. The festival is part of UC San Diego's yearly Triton Day and is open to all ages. For more information, contact (858) 534-4390.

April 20: A celebration of Chicano Park's 43rd Anniversary will last all day at the park in Barrio Logan. Lunch at the Las Cuatro Milpas restaurant, vendors, entertainment and transportation from UC San Diego to Barrio Logan are included in the celebration. 11 a.m., April 30: The UC San Diego Cross-Cultural Center will screen the 2009 film, La Mission from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The story follows a recovering alcoholic and reformed inmate played by Benjamin Bratt who works to redeem himself and reconnect with his only son. 11 a.m., May 7: The UC San Diego Cross-Cultural Center will screen the 2011 documentary, Chicano Legacy: 40 Anos Mural, which tells the story of the installation and unveiling of the Mario Torero mural at Peterson Hall on UC San Diego campus.
