Airman 1st Class Jonathan Santos-Carvajal, 20, of Yuba City, California, was killed in a single-car accident in Germany on Dec. 4.
According to 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs, Santos-Carvajal lost control of his vehicle after attempting to pass another car on the road, and collided with a boulder.
German police told Stars and Stripes:
Santos-Carvajal was pinned inside. Rescue workers from the base’s fire department extracted him from the wreckage, while a passenger was able to get out of the car unassisted...
Santos-Carvajal was taken to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, where he later died.
Santos-Carvajal was assigned to the 86th Airlift Wing at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, where he served as an aerospace maintenance apprentice.
Brig. Gen. Patrick X. Mordente, 86th Airlift Wing commander, said in a statement upon learning of Santos-Carvajal's death:
"Airman 1st Class Jonathan Santos-Carvajal was a valuable member of the 86th Airlift Wing and we are deeply saddened by his untimely loss. He will be sorely missed and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and his friends."
Investigators are still looking into whether speed or alcohol played a role in the crash.
