The San Diego Convention Center has booked 111 events so far for next year, which should generate an economic impact of $1.4 billion and tax revenue of $20.6 million, according to a report released Monday.
The booked shows are expected to draw around 858,000 attendees, which would be the highest total since 2008, according to the forecast from the San Diego Convention Center Corp. They should also account for 690,000 room nights at area hotels, the report said.
The slate includes 70 conventions, the biggest being the annual Comic-Con International in July.
Medical meetings often have huge local economic impact, and the report said San Diego is set to host 15 of them next year, including the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Thoracic Society, Society for Experimental Biology and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Those medical meetings are expected to bring 121,000 attendees to town.
The major meetings begin next month, with the National Collegiate Athletic Association — NCAA — convention set to begin Jan. 15. The first trade show with large attendance will be the West 2014 maritime event, expected to bring 12,000 attendees Feb. 11-13.
The report says more events, with shorter-term bookings, are expected to be added to next year's calendar.
