U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel briefs the press in Kabul, Afghanistan, March 10, 2013.

Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has ordered a review of the so-called "drone medal" to be led by Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey, according to Stars and Stripes.

The Distinguished Warfare Medal's ranking above the Purple Heart and Bronze Star has raised the ire of veterans groups and lawmakers alike.

As Home Post previously reported, a bipartisan group from the House of Representatives and one from the U.S. Senate both sent Hagel letters urging him to demote the Distinguished Warfare Medal.

The Associated Press reported today that production on the medal has actually been halted as a result of Hagel's decision to order a review.

An anonymous government official told the A.P. the reason for the production stop:

If the review agrees with complaints about the medal, it would likely have to be renamed and new medals manufactured...
