Governor Brown has ordered flags above the state capitol lowered to half-staff today to honor Air Force Tech Sgt. Herman Mackey III, 30, of Bakersfield, who was killed when his plane crashed in Kyrgyzstan on May 3.

The governor released a statement reading:

On behalf of all Californians, Governor Brown and First Lady Anne Gust Brown honor Tech Sgt. Herman Mackey III, who bravely gave his life in service to our state and nation. The Governor and First Lady extend their deepest condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.

Capt. Victoria A. Pinckney and son.

Flags were lowered Tuesday above the capitol for Capt. Victoria A. Pinckney, 27, of Palmdale, who also perished in the crash.

As Home Post previously reported, the U.S. Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker went down in a mountainous region of northern Kyrgyzstan on May 3. The plane was reportedly on its way to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
