Navy Squadron Executive Officer Fired For DUI On Naval Base Coronado

The Navy has fired Cmdr. Samuel Tanner from his job as executive officer of Strike Fighter Squadron 34, after Tanner was cited for drunken driving on Naval Base Coronado earlier this month.

Tanner's squadron was conducting training at Naval Air Station, North Island, when he received his citation for driving under the influence, according to Naval Air Force Atlantic Public Affairs:

Tanner was cited by a Naval Base Coronado Security Patrolman while in a vehicle on base on 15 November.

During the Captain's Mast, (Commander Carrier Air Wing Two, Capt. Christopher) Murdoch found Tanner to be in violation of Article 111 of the Uniformed Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), Drunken Operation of a Motor Vehicle.

VFA-34 is an F/A-18 Hornet squadron based at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia. It is assigned to Carrier Air Wing Two, which operates as part of the San Diego-based USS Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group.

Tanner is now (at least temporarily) part of the staff of Commander, Strike Fighter Wing Atlantic at NAS Oceana.
