State Capitol Flags Lowered For San Diego Army Nurse Killed In Afghanistan (Video)

California Governor Jerry Brown ordered flags lowered Tuesday in honor of Army 1st Lt. Jennifer M. Moreno, 25, of San Diego. Moreno and three other soldiers were killed October 6 in an improvised explosive device attack in Afghanistan.

Brown released a statement that read, in part:

"On behalf of all Californians, Governor Brown and First Lady Anne Gust Brown honor 1st Lt. Jennifer M. Moreno, who bravely gave her life in service to our state and nation. The Governor and First Lady extend their deepest condolences to her family and friends at this difficult time."

Moreno attended San Diego High School, where she was an active member of the school's ROTC program, according to NBC7. Moreno earned a scholarship to the University of San Francisco, where she completed her education to become an Army nurse.

Moreno's former ROTC instructor, 1st Sgt. Lawrance Mayorga, choked up when he spoke with NBC7 about the kind of student Moreno was. You'll find that video posted up top.
