CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Indians' interleague series opener with the San Diego Padres has been postponed by rain and will be made up as part of a doubleheader Wednesday.
Steady rain fell at Progressive Field in the hours leading up to Monday's game, and with the forecast calling for more showers, the Indians officially postponed the game at 5:13 — less than hours before the scheduled opening pitch.
The game will be made up as part of a traditional doubleheader, with the first game scheduled to begin at 12:05 p.m.
This is the Indians' second postponement in seven days. They were rained out last week in Oakland — the Athletics' first rainout since 1998 — and played a day-night doubleheader the next day.
Because the Padres are not scheduled to come back to Cleveland this season, the Indians decided to make up the postponement as soon as possible.
