The USS Bonhomme Richard is at the scene of an overturned South Korean ferry, standing by to help with rescue efforts.
U.S. Naval Forces Korea Public Affairs reports the passenger ship Sewol sank off South Korea’s southwestern coast on Wednesday with more than 450 people aboard.
As many as 340 of the passengers were high school students on a field trip, according to Reuters.
Capt. Heidi C. Agle, commodore of U.S. Amphibious Squadron 11, said the USS Bonhomme Richard was on a routine patrol when news came of the sinking ferry:
"When we were alerted to the accident, we immediately diverted to the scene to render assistance."
The commanding officer of the Bonhomme Richard posted on Facebook:
"Our friends, the ROK Coast Guard and Navy have the lead during this operation and the South Korean responders have been very efficient with their efforts. We are currently in a standby status, in close proximity to the site and we are in communication with the one scene commander. We remain ready to offer whatever help is required."

The USS Bonhomme Richard is forward-deployed to Sasebo, Japan as part of the U.S. 7th Fleet. The ship was homeported in San Diego until 2012.
