Organizers of the annual Fleet Week San Diego announced Tuesday that a new festival, the "Fleet Week Big Bay Bash," has been added this year.

Among the scheduled events:

• the Fleet Week Enlisted Golf Tournament, Sept. 12 at the Admiral Baker Golf Course;

• the 17th annual Coronado Speed Festival, Sept. 20-21 at Naval Air Station North Island;

• the MCRD Boot Camp Challenge, Sept. 27 at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot;

• the Miramar Air Show, Oct. 3-4 at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar; and

• the Fleet Week Football Classic, with San Diego State hosting Air Force, on Nov. 21 at Qualcomm Stadium.

The event — which will include live music, food, a beer garden, admission to the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum, military static displays, and a family fun zone featuring a rock climbing wall, rides and photo booth — will take place Oct. 18 at the Broadway Pier.

The Big Bay Bash will be free to active-duty military and their families, according to the San Diego Fleet Week Foundation.

Fleet Week consists of numerous military-themed activities that take place around San Diego — actually over the course of a few months in the late summer and fall.

The Coronado Speed Festival features automobile racing, car displays and a base open house. The boot camp challenge puts participants through a 3-mile obstacle course with assistance from Marine drill instructors.

The air show will resume. It was canceled last year, one day before it was to start, due to the federal budget standoff.

Ex-Mayor Jerry Sanders, now the CEO of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, is the honorary chairman of this year's Fleet Week.
