San Diego Padres, Seth Smith agree to $4.5 million contract

Seth Smith and the San Diego Padres have agreed to a $4.5 million, one-year contract to avoid arbitration.

The outfielder was acquired on Dec. 3 from the Oakland Athletics for right-handed reliever Luke Gregerson. Smith, a left-handed hitter, batted .253 with eight home runs and 40 RBIs last year.

His contract is not guaranteed.
