Boat Overturns After Hitting Whale Off San Diego Coast

Two boaters were thrown from a boat they say was struck by a whale about 12 miles off the San Diego coast, KPBS media parter 10News reports.

Two people were tossed from their 23-foot vessel Wednesday afternoon and called for help. A Good Samaritan came to their aid and the pair were later brought to shore at Shelter Island. Their conditions are unknown at this point.

U.S. Coast Guard crews did not respond to the incident, but a Coast Guard official told KPBS the distress call was monitored and crews were ready to help if needed. City News Service reported a commercial salvage vessel was called out to right the foundered boat.

The two boaters told others that their boat was flipped by a blue whale, but Coast Guard officials did not immediately comment on that possibility.

The Coast Guard had no information regarding the whale’s condition.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
