An unnamed Army official told the Journal:
The decision by Sgt. Bergdahl... suggests a deeper estrangement between the soldier and his parents than the military understood when he was released. Still, officials said, they don’t know the precise cause of the tension or when it began.
As Home Post previously reported, Bergdahl was discovered missing from his duty station in eastern Afghanistan on June 30, 2009. He was declared missing/captured three days later.
There is an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding Bergdahl's capture. However, Department of Defense News reports:
An initial Army investigation into Bergdahl’s disappearance in June 2009 did not conclude that he voluntarily left his installation, an Army official, speaking on background, said during a briefing last month.
On May 31, 2014, the United States transferred five detainees from Guantánamo Bay to Qatar in exchange for Bergdahl's freedom.
Bergdahl returned to regular active duty at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, Texas on Monday, as reported by CNN:
