3.4 Earthquake Shakes East County San Diego Desert Area

A 3.4 earthquake hit 11 miles north-northwest of Borrego Springs shortly before 3:40 a.m., July 17, 2014.

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 3.4 struck the East County desert today about 11 miles north-northwest of Borrego Springs, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

Automated seismographs picked up the quake shortly before 7:30 a.m. and indicated it struck at a depth of 8 miles.

The epicenter was about 17 miles south-southwest of La Quinta, 20 miles south of Palm Desert and 21 miles south of Rancho Mirage, according to a computer-generated report.

A few residents in El Centro, La Quinta, Palm Desert, San Diego and Thermal reported weak shaking to the USGS, but no damages.
