California Governor Jerry Brown says the surge of undocumented immigrant children crossing into the United States from Central America is a humanitarian problem rather than a political one. And he says it’s something the federal government must take the lead on.

But ahead of his trade trip to Mexico next week, Brown offered some ideas Wednesday on how to stem the influx.

"In terms of big, longer term solutions, I think trade and cultural exchange and a lot of mutual investment is what’s going to make a lot of those Central American countries do better and be safer," Brown said.

"And, in that regard, I think Mexico will play a very important role. And I would like California, in its own way as a state, to do whatever it can in a constructive way."

Brown says he’s pleased to see some conservatives taking what he calls a "compassionate view" of the situation.
