Heat Wave Expected To Hit San Diego On Thursday

High pressure building over the Four Corners area Wednesday is expected to bring hotter weather to San Diego County, especially in the inland areas, forecasters said.

Temperatures could reach 116 degrees in the deserts and up to 105 degrees in the mountains, National Weather Service forecaster Mike Watkins said.

"It's going to be hot, but it's possibly just about 5 to 10 degrees above normal," Watkins said, adding a shallow marine layer will keep the coastal areas "from getting too out of hand."

A National Weather Service heat advisory is set to take effect for the inland areas at 11 a.m. Thursday and will extend until 9 p.m. Friday.

Weather service forecasters said hot weather can be stressful for people and pets if precautions are not taken. Kids and pets must not be left unattended in vehicles because temperatures inside can quickly rise to lethal levels.

San Diego County is in the midst of a multiyear drought, and Cal Fire spokesman Kendal Bortisser said fuel loads are at "critically dry levels of moisture." Weather service meteorologist Phil Gonsalves said winds during this hot spell shouldn't be an additional fire risk.

"This is not the typical pattern that produces strong wind," Gonsalves said.
