"The Grand Budapest Hotel" (opening March 14 in San Diego) is Wes Anderson's latest film and he taps many of his favorite actors. To prepare audiences for the film Fox Searchlight is hosting a retrospective of his films at The Digital Gym Cinema.

Wes Anderson's films are precious. It's their greatest charm but also their occasional weakness when they become too self-indulgent. But while many films and filmmakers play safely within formula parameters, Anderson creates a world wholly his own. You can take almost any single frame of an Anderson movie and immediately know it's his. The composition, the colors, the characters -- they all feel uniquely his own. And it's for that that I am grateful for him.

Just as Fox Searchlight has done in preparation of the release of the latest from Terence Malick, Alexander Payne, and Park Chan Wook, the studio is once again hosting a filmmaker's retrospective so audiences can place a new film in a bigger context. It's a brilliant idea and I applaud Fox Searchlight for doing this. Seeing Park Chan Wook's Revenge Trilogy right before watching "Stoker" made all the films richer and my appreciation of his artistry even greater.

The Digital Gym has been selected as the venue to present special retrospective screenings of "Bottle Rocket" (1995), "Rushmore" (1998), "The Royal Tenenbaums" (2001), "The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou" (2004), and "Moonrise Kingdom" (2012). Sadly, "The Fantastic Mr. Fox" and "Darjeeling Limited" were unavailable. The films screen tonight through Saturday at 9pm, in chronological order.

You can watch all five movies for $30, three for $20, or individually for $10.50.

There will be complimentary passes to an advance screening of Wes Anderson’s upcoming film, "The Grand Budapest Hotel" available on a limited basis to attendees of the retrospective. I will be there tonight to finally catch up with his debut film, "Bottle Rocket" with a very young Owen Wilson.
