There were bigger than normal waves at San Diego area beaches for the second consecutive day Wednesday, meteorologists said.

The National Weather Service attributed the high surf to a large long-period northwest swell. A high surf advisory issued by the agency midday Tuesday was scheduled to expire at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Through early this afternoon, 4- to 7-foot waves with higher sets are expected.

Previously, the agency said 5- to 8-foot surf with sets to 10 feet was likely.

High surf can cause strong rip currents and minor beach erosion.
