Cal Fire tweets that it is on scene of a brush fire in Spring Valley, May 1, 2014.

Firefighters stopped a Spring Valley brush fire at 2 acres before it was able to damage nearby homes on Thursday afternoon, said Cal Fire Capt. Kendal Bortisser.

About 10 homes near Elkelton Boulevard and Jamacha Road were threatened when crews arrived on the scene around 3:05 p.m., Bortisser said. Sheriff's deputies evacuated the homes and nearby Avondale Elementary School.

Ten engines and a helicopter were used to battle the blaze, Bortisser said.

The helicopter "made multiple water drops, and did an outstanding job of taking a lot of the fire out," he said.

By 4:05 p.m., the fire was squelched. One shed was damaged and some pigs were killed, but no homes were damaged, Bortisser said.

Sheriff's Lt. Rich Williams said deputies requested the California Highway Patrol close the state Route 125 off-ramp at Jamacha Road while crews battled the blaze.
