The San Diego County Office of Education reported that each school district will continue to make school closure decisions on a day-to-day basis. The Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego is telling Catholic schools to make their own decisions about closure, based on what neighboring public schools are doing. A County school district official said schools are considering the following factors as they make their decisions:

· Location of the current fire(s) and proximity to campuses

· Air quality

· Weather conditions

· Difficulty in staffing school sites, with many school employees impacted by evacuations and unable to report for duty

· Public safety officials' recommendation to keep the roads clear for emergency responders and evacuees

· Energy officials' recommendations to conserve energy

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
