Incumbents Leading In California State Office Races

In addition to picking a governor, California voters weighed in on other top state offices, paving the way for many incumbents to retain their positions.

Democrat Gavin Newsom secured his return as lieutenant governor. He was challenged by Republican businessman Ron Nehring of San Diego.

Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Los Angeles, beat out Republican Pete Peterson for secretary of state by just over 700 votes, while Betty Yee bested Republican Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin, a member of the state Board of Equalization, in a close race for state controller.

Controller John Chiang, a Democrat, won his bid to become state Treasurer, in the face of a challenge from Republican businessman Greg Conlon.

Democratic state Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones returns to the office, defeating Republican insurance agent Ted Gaines.

Attorney General Kamala Harris won re-election against Republican challenger, attorney Ronald Gold.
