Second Person Dies In Carlsbad Crash

The 79-year-old driver of a car that crashed Sunday in Carlsbad has died, police said Tuesday. Her 91-year-old passenger from Oceanside died at the scene.

Authorities have not released the names of the driver or her male passenger. The Medical Examiner’s Office said the driver was the passenger’s “significant other.”

The couple were in a silver Nissan going north on Monroe Street, near Hosp Way, about 10 a.m. Sunday when for unknown reasons the driver lost control of the car, authorities said. The car crossed the southbound lanes and hit a tree.

Residents in a nearby condominium complex heard the crash and called 911. The driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where she died Monday, police said.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
