Eight San Diego Hospitals Make National List Of Top Performers

A new report from the nonprofit Joint Commission ranks eight San Diego hospitals among the nation's top performers in healthcare quality.

San Diego’s VA Medical Center, Kaiser, Paradise Valley, Scripps La Jolla, Scripps Green, Sharp Memorial, Sharp Grossmont and Sharp Coronado hospitals made the list. It's the fourth year in a row Paradise Valley has made the Commission's top-performers list.

The report examined how hospitals fared on 46 different measures. Winning hospitals had to meet quality care standards for more than 95 percent of patients with various conditions, including heart failure and pneumonia.

Dr. Amy Adome, Sharp's senior vice president for clinical effectiveness, said she’s still not satisfied.

“Ninety-five percent on face value seems great, but it’s still not perfect, and we need to strive for 100 percent, because that’s the end game," she said.

The Joint Commission report is one of many that measure healthcare quality. There is no universal standard.

An earlier version of this story left South Bay's Paradise Valley hospital off the list. KPBS regrets the omission.
