A Navy investigation is underway into what caused two of its ships to collide in the Gulf of Aden.

Military Sealift Command dry cargo and ammunition ship USNS Amelia Earhart (T-AKE 6) and Military Sealift Command fleet replenishment oiler USNS Walter S. Diehl (T-AO 193) collided Thursday at 5:26 a.m. (GMT).

According to the Navy, the two ships hit each other as they were getting started on an underway replenishment operation.

As The Associated Press explains...

Naval "underway replenishments" typically involve ships coming within 100 to 150 feet, or 30 to 45 meters, of one another and ferrying dry goods across cables and fuel through hoses.

Both ships sustained only minor damage:

The ships are operating under their own power and are continuing their assigned missions.

No injuries have been reported on either ship.
