A trough of low pressure moving southeast through California brought scattered light showers to San Diego County early Friday, contributing to a greater than normal amount of traffic accidents, authorities said.
There were 82 crash reports received by local California Highway Patrol dispatchers between 12:01 and 8 a.m. Friday, the agency reported.
More than half of those 82 crashes — 44 — were reported between 6 and 8 a.m., according to the highway patrol, which typically receives 50 to 75 crash reports during a non-rainy day. Most of Friday's crashes were considered minor, with no injuries or only minor injuries involved.
The highway patrol tally does not include crashes that occurred on city streets or unincorporated roadways patrolled by the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.
The showers were likely to last through Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service. The showers are expected to decrease from northwest to southeast Friday morning, the weather service said.
Isolated thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are possible, the weather service said on its Facebook page.
Precipitation totals should be around a quarter-inch in the mountains and less than a tenth of an inch west of the mountains, the weather service said.
