Chargers Offer Free Mammograms Thursday At The Q

Free mammograms will be provided to women 40 and older from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at Qualcomm Stadium as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

All participants will receive a primary medical placement and be linked to a medical home, which is important for following up each year, said Laura Farmer Sherman, executive director of Komen San Diego, which is partnering with the San Diego Chargers to underwrite the cost of the mammograms.

Additional breast health information will also be available. Women under 40 needing assistance will be directed to a program that is able to provide the help they need, Farmer Sherman said.

"These free mammograms will help us save the lives of a San Diegan without the resources she needs to stay healthy," Farmer Sherman said. "In San Diego, every day six women are diagnosed with breast cancer and one woman dies. The Chargers are helping change that statistic."

The Chargers last year became the first NFL team to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month by funding free mammograms and inspired other teams to also do so, Farmer Sherman said.
