Supreme Court Blocks Abortion Rules That Closed Most Texas Clinics

The Supreme Court on Tuesday halted enforcement of a sweeping anti-abortion bill in Texas that had closed more than a dozen clinics in the state.

NPR's John Burnett reports:

"The Fifth Circuit in New Orleans told Texas that it could go ahead with restrictions that would force doctors at clinics that perform abortions to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals. Another rule required expensive hospital-type upgrades if a clinic wants to perform abortions. "Under the law the high court blocked, only abortion facilities in major urban areas could afford to remain open; those along the Texas-Mexico border have all shut down."

The Fifth Circuit is still considering the overall constitutionality of the law, John reports.
