Visitation and a vigil are scheduled Tuesday at Saint Joseph Cathedral in downtown San Diego for mourners to pay their respects to Cirilo Flores, bishop of the Catholic diocese of San Diego.

Flores died Sept. 6, at the age of 65, after a short battle with cancer. Nearly four months earlier, he suffered a stroke in his office.

According to the diocese, Flores' body will be received at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Saint Joseph Cathedral, where visitation will take place from 10:15 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. The vigil is scheduled for 7 p.m.

On Wednesday, a funeral Mass will be said at noon at Saint Therese Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Flores became San Diego's bishop about one year ago, replacing Robert Brom. He is being replaced on an interim basis as administrator of the diocese by Steven Callahan.

Callahan, a native of Aurora, Colorado, was ordained as a priest in 1987 and currently serves as the vicar general of the diocese. He is also the pastor at Saint Brigid parish in Pacific Beach.

The diocese requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Bishop Flores Memorial Fund for Catholic Education, Diocese of San Diego, P.O. Box 85728, San Diego, California, 92186, or to Catholic Charities, Diocese of San Diego, 349 Cedar St., San Diego, 92101.
