Three small fires broke out early Thursday in the City Heights neighborhood, and at least two are thought to be the result of arson, police said.

The latest was a car fire in the 4800 block of Polk Avenue reported around 2:40 a.m., according to San Diego police and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. But San Diego police Sgt. Ray Battrick said that fire may have resulted from an equipment malfunction.

Two earlier fires were believed to have been intentionally started, according to the sergeant. A fire burned the side of a house in the 4200 block of Chamoune Avenue, and a mattress was set on fire in the nearby 4200 block of 46th Street, he said.

Battrick said two possible suspects were detained but not immediately arrested.
