Early Tuesday morning Chula Vista Elementary School District and its union reached a tentative three-year agreement after an all-night negotiation session.

The marathon session began Monday afternoon and wrapped up at 5 a.m. Tuesday.

Teachers will get 3 percent retroactive raises for both 2013 and 2014, along with a 1 percent raise in 2015.

The teachers' health coverage cap will grow incrementally. A health coverage cap sets the maximum that the employee will pay. This year, it goes up to $8,500. In January 2015, it increases to $9,000 with a final $500 increase set for July 2015.

Class sizes stay at current levels, and sick days remain at 10 per year.

“The bargaining team believes that this was the best deal that could be obtained to avoid the pain and risks of a strike,” Union President Manual Yvellez said.

The union negotiators will present the new contract to its members for a vote in three weeks.
