Barrio Logan Catholics observed Good Friday with a reenactment of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
Parishioners at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church led the moveable play through neighborhood streets.
In the Catholic religion, reenacting the crucifixion is customary and the congregation plays every role from Mary Magdalene to Jesus Christ.
Father John Author of Our Lady of Guadalupe said the custom is key in the religious and cultural life of the Barrio Logan community.
“To re-enact it matches what we’re doing inside the church as well, which is to read about the passion of Jesus, today from the gospel of John,” Author said.
Every key event of the crucifixion is performed, from Pontius Pilate to Jesus being nailed to a cross. Father Author said the re-enactment is a unique way of telling the story.
"And so there's this constant interplay between talking with your neighbors as you walk along and then focusing on what the particular station is as we stop," Author said.
Easter Sunday is the holiest day of the Christian calendar. It will be celebrated with services in nearly every church. Our Lady of Guadalupe expects a full house for each mass from sunrise to sunset.
