San Diego County Event To Offer Free Blood Pressure Screenings

San Diegans can have their blood pressure checked for free Friday at more than 200 locations across the county.

Coming right before Valentine's Day, the "Love Your Hearts" event is organized by the county of San Diego.

Locations include county facilities, fire stations, libraries, health clinics and Walgreens outlets.

"We are going to help San Diegans to 'love their hearts' by offering free blood pressure screenings all over the county," said Supervisor Ron Roberts. "This is the fourth year we're offering San Diegans this opportunity to take the first step toward being heart healthy."

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, and the second-leading cause of death in San Diego County, according to county health officials, who said about 4,500 San Diegans die from diseases of the heart every year.

Last year, more than 17,000 people were checked at the event for high blood pressure, which is a risk factor for heart disease.

Locations of screening sites are listed online here. They can also be obtained by dialing 211. Hours will vary at the different locations.
