BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair Inc. will pay more than $54,000 to settle civil litigation stemming from a spill of around 42 gallons of oil into San Diego Bay, the City Attorney's Office announced Tuesday.
A complaint filed by the city accused BAE Systems of negligence in failing to immediately contain, clean up and remove the oil in the most effective manner to minimize environmental damage, following the spill from a drydock in March 2012.
"We deserve nothing less than safe and clean water in San Diego Bay," City Attorney Jan Goldsmith said. "We appreciate BAE Systems' cooperation in our investigation. Businesses that make use of this important public resource will be held to the highest standards under the law."
BAE Systems admitted no wrongdoing in the settlement. The City Attorney's Office said the company will pay $32,500 to the state Department of Fish and Game's Environmental Enhancement Fund, around $4,100 to the agency's Oil Spill Response Trust Fund, $10,000 to the City Attorney's Office, and $7,500 in civil penalties to be divided between the city and county governments.
