San Ysidro Park Gets Improvements

Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Councilman David Alvarez dedicated eight lights Tuesday that will illuminate multipurpose and baseball fields at Larsen Field in San Ysidro.

Thanks to the lights, the city-owned park at 455 Sycamore Drive will have additional fields open at night for youth soccer, flag football and baseball programs.

"Our mission to build 'One San Diego' means making sure our first-class parks are accessible and safe for children and families," Faulconer said, referring to his governing theme. "The new lights at Larsen Field allow people in the neighborhood to enjoy their park more hours of the day while ensuring environmental and financial responsibility."

The project also included improvements that will make the new fields accessible for people with disabilities. The area features new drinking fountains, dugouts and walkways.

"The improved Larsen Field is a beautiful community asset for everyone in San Ysidro," Alvarez said. "The new recreation field facilities features make this a model for our future park development efforts. I appreciate the hard work of the San Ysidro Recreation Council and City staff for making this new improved park a reality."

The project also separated the electrical systems of the lights and park buildings, which makes the facility eligible for a special rate from San Diego Gas & Electric.

City officials estimate they will save as much as 20 percent on ongoing lighting expenses.
