Stretch Of Carlsbad State Beach Closed After Sewage Spill

A stretch of Carlsbad State Beach was closed Wednesday because of a sewage spill, authorities said.

Wastewater began overflowing at a treatment plant on Avenida Encinas in Carlsbad on Tuesday when a gate valve failed to close properly, according to the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health. The sewage entered Encina Creek, which empties into the surf at Carlsbad State Beach.

Signs warning of pollution hazards will stand 500 feet north and south of the creek mouth until follow-up testing deems the area safe again for recreational uses.
