Judge Says San Diego Sheriff's Department Can Drop Facebook

A federal judge says the San Diego County Sheriff's Department has the right to get rid of its Facebook page.

U-T San Diego says the page was taken down two months ago after an Oceanside gun-parts dealer sued the department.

Dimitrios Karras claimed his free-speech rights were violated when officials removed two of his postings to the page that were critical of Sheriff Bill Gore and banned him from the page.

He asked a judge to order the agency to restore the page and his comments. That motion was rejected Tuesday but the lawsuit can still proceed in federal court.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
