An accidental shooting in City Heights left a man in his 20s with an ankle wound Tuesday afternoon and prompted a brief lockdown at a primary school in the neighborhood.
The victim was hanging out with friends and "playing with a gun" at Jeremy Henwood Memorial Park — named for a San Diego police officer gunned down in the line of duty in 2011 — when the weapon discharged about 1:45 p.m., SDPD spokesman Matt Tortorella said.
Administrators at nearby Rosa Parks Elementary School secured students and staffers indoors for about a half-hour while officers investigated.
Medics took the victim, whose name was not released, to Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest for treatment of the non-life-threatening leg injury.
It was unclear what type of charge the shooter might face over the accident, though a count of negligent handling of a firearm was among the likely possibilities, Tortorella said.
