Fallen Tree Causes Power Outages In Carlsbad

Utility crews restored electrical service Thursday to dozens of Carlsbad homes and businesses left in the dark due to an overnight power outage.

The blackout began about 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, when a tree caught fire and damaged a power line in the vicinity of Elmwood Street and Highland Drive, according to Carlsbad police and San Diego Gas & Electric. Authorities closed some nearby traffic lanes to allow for repairs.

The mishap caused two outages, the first of which struck immediately and affected 114 properties. The second occurred shortly after 10 p.m. and left 1,022 customers without power, according to the utility.

As of 4:30 this morning, service had been restored to all but 120 addresses.

All affected areas were back on line by late morning, SDG&E reported.

It was unclear what caused the tree to begin burning.
