Authorities respond to the scene where a man was hit and killed by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train in downtown San Diego, June 10, 2015.

An investigation was underway Thursday in the Marina District, where a man was struck and killed by a freight train, possibly while attempting to perform a stunt.

The man was apparently trying to cross underneath the Burlington Northern Santa Fe train when he was struck on the tracks near the intersection of Market Place and West Harbor Drive, according to San Diego police and the county sheriff's department. He died at the scene.

San Diego police were first dispatched to the scene shortly after 11:30 p.m., then called the sheriff's department's Coaster/Railroad Enforcement Unit, which investigates all incidents along the 62 miles of tracks in San Diego County, authorities said.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
