Fire investigators are working to determine what sparked a small brush fire that burned vegetation and damaged a building near Lindbergh Field Thursday morning.
The fire broke out before 4:30 a.m. in the 1300 block of West Palm Street, adjacent to the Metropolitan Transit System trolley tracks. San Diego Fire-Rescue crews arrived to find the back of a Budget Rental Car building on fire, with sparks coming from nearby power lines and transformer boxes. A wooden deck outside the building was also ablaze.
The fire burned some brush, charred a power pole and damaged the side of the Budget Rental Car building before crews brought it under control a little before 5 a.m.
San Diego Gas & Electric shut down power to the immediate area, which forced MTS to temporarily halt trolley service at the nearby Green Line Middletown Station. Power and trolley service were restored just after 5:30 a.m.
San Diego Fire-Rescue investigators are attempting to determine if the fire started in the brush and spread to the building, or whether it started in the building itself.
There were no injuries.
Palm Street was closed during the incident.
