Critics Of California Vaccine Bill Vow To Keep Fighting

The state Assembly approved it and the governor may sign it, but opponents of a Senate bill that would ban personal belief exemptions to childhood vaccinations say they’re not going away.

Some critics of Senate Bill 277 have already started a recall effort against lawmakers who’ve supported it.

Christina Hildebrand, founder of A Voice for Choice, said her group will sue if the governor signs the measure. She argued it’s unconstitutional.

“Children have a fundamental right under the California constitution to a free and public education, and that’s being taken away by this bill," Hildebrand said.

Supporters say it’s time California insisted that all schoolchildren get vaccinated against measles and other diseases. The bill would require those that don’t to be homeschooled.

The measure has been one the most hotly debated bills in the Legislature this year.
