Two teenage trespassers wandering around Scripps Ranch High School — one carrying what appeared to possibly be a gun — prompted a roughly 90-minute lockdown at the campus Tuesday while officers rounded up the pair.
The intruders bolted when a school security officer came face-to-face with them at the Treena Street secondary school about 11 a.m., according to San Diego Unified School District officials.
The guard grabbed one of the youths, believed to be about 16 years old, but the other got away, SDUSD police Capt. Joe Florentino said.
The other teenager appeared to have something the general size and shape of a pistol in his waistband, under his shirt, prompting officers to be on high alert while tracking him down.
Teachers kept all students secured in their classrooms during the search by city and school police.
About 12:30 p.m., officers found the second suspect, an 18-year-old, at a community pool roughly a half-mile from the school and took him into custody. He had stripped down to his boxer shorts, possibly in an attempt to pass for a sunbather, according to Florentino.
No weapon was immediately found.
The younger suspect's identity was withheld because he is a minor. The name of the older one — who also was the subject of an arrest warrant for an alleged probation violation — was not immediately available. Both suspects were expected to face trespassing charges and possibly other criminal counts, the captain said.
