San Diego County Heat Wave Breaks Records

The onset of an unseasonable heat wave in the San Diego area Friday set at least a half-dozen temperature records.

In Chula Vista, the mercury climbed to 91 degrees, topping the prior March 13 milestone of 87, set in 1994, according to the National Weather Service. In Escondido and San Diego, the thermometer hit 89 degrees, exceeding the cities' shared former mark of 87, set on this date in 2013 and 1994, respectively.

Oceanside and Vista, meanwhile, each tallied 86, surpassing the old records of 77 (1947) and 85 (1994), and Alpine experienced a high of 84 degrees, which outdid the former landmark reading of 82, set two years ago.

On Saturday and Sunday, increasing high pressure will bring even warmer conditions, forecasters said. The National Weather Service advised those planning outdoor activities this weekend to take care to avoid heat-related ailments..
