Tijuana-Based Nortec Collective Calls It Quits

Tijuana-based Nortec Collective has played its last note—at least together.

The group, which emerged 15 years ago, became popular when they created a new style of music, blending Mexican Norteño music with electronic beats.

In what they’re calling their final album, "Motel Baja", musicians Ramon Amezcua, also known as Bostich, and Pepe Mot, also known as Fussible, said the tracks combine many of their earlier sounds, and feature collaborations from other artists.

"Motel Baja" reflects Tijuana’s cultural changes since Nortec Collective began recording together.

“There’s less violence and Tijuana is a happier place now, and you can experience that in 'Motel Baja'” Fussible said.

Bostich added that Nortec Collective’s earlier music reflected the violence that was happening at the time.

“But we didn’t glorify it, we just experienced what was happening at the time,” he explained.

Both men said they will continue their musical careers.

So why not together?

“We accomplished what we wanted and now we will explore music in new ways,” Bostich said.
