San Diego On List Of Cities With Most Energy Star-Certified Buildings

San Diego ranks 17th on a list of the 25 U.S. cities with the most Energy Star-certified buildings, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced Wednesday.

Los Angeles ranked second on the list, while Riverside placed 14th, according to the agency.

"Cities across Southern California have saved more than $196 million and reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 400,215 tons because of energy efficient buildings and upgrades," according to Jared Blumenfeld, regional administrator for the agency's Pacific Southwest office. "Nationwide, these efforts are essential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the negative effects of climate change."

Los Angeles ranked second on the list, with 475 Energy Star certified buildings in 2014. Washington, D.C., topped the list with 480. Riverside had 127, while San Diego had 92.

According to the agency, more than 25,000 buildings across the country have earned Energy Star certification since 1999. The buildings are considered 75 percent more energy efficient than normal structures, using an average of 35 percent less energy and 35 percent fewer emissions.
